BEIJING 2008

Rachael Sporn: Opals outclassed but still number two

Last night was a real anticlimax when you think about how well the Opals have been performing in the Beijing Games.

It was the gold medal showdown we wanted, the two best teams in the world. We built this clash up and that is why we're so disappointed today. It was a comprehensive 92-65 win for the Americans and our girls can only regroup and get back into the swing.

What it came down to was the shooting. The Opals shot 25 per cent but let the Americans shoot 57. You can't get away with those kind of statistics at this level and the result reflected the game.

Lauren Jackson was well contained and Penny Taylor's injury saw her unable to do the things she can usually do. Well done to Belinda Snell, whose hard work kept us in the game throughout the first half.

I was with the girls last night and it's hard to comprehend just how devastated they are at the moment. I just hope that after a few days they can take stock and realise they do have a silver medal, they are the second best in the world and it's not that bad after all.

Well done to our girls. Disappointing of course, but still a job well done. Australia is proud of them

Let's hope we can get a coach next time that can handle this type of adversity. It should've been clear early on that the starting 5 weren't firing. Stirling failed to adapt to problems in defence, rebounds, and poor shot selection. Erin Phillips, who has an excellent inside/outside game, sat out the entire game. Stirling wasn't able to settle the girls' nerves which is vital in such a crucial game. Tactically, a disaster.

and to top it off, the gold medal basketball match in Vic didnt come on until the second half. They then cut it short but skipping the final quarter saying they will show it after the News. When they get back from the news, they pack in a 10min exciting final qtr into 30sec!!
this was meant to be the best coverage since Sydney so they say. Quantity is not Quality. This coverage has totally put me off the Olympics. DISGRACE!!!
