BEIJING 2008

Debbie Watson: Americans hungry but not Hungary

The US men's waterpolo team will still be pinching themselves after running away from the Serbians in the semi-finals last night for a 10-5 win. We were aware however that there had been some internal disharmony within the Serbian ranks and it really showed in the pool. They played like they were a team that didn't like each other and that makes success nearly impossible in any sport.

The US will leave nothing behind, but I think the Hungarians will be too good. Some are going for their third gold medals and they mix their experience with youthful talent and great skill.

I was quietly pleased after the Netherlands edged out the US for women's gold. I tipped them as a dark horse team at the start and they ended up going all the way. It was great for the sport as they have a fast and flowing game, with an open style and great outside shooting. I have found the sport to be heavy on the outside lately and the Netherlands really opened it up.

Well done to the Aussie girls for their bronze. They'll be slightly disappointed but to go home with a medal is a remarkable feat.
