BEIJING 2008

Matthew White: The sleeping giant awakes

As we count down to the closing ceremony (not the opening ceremony like I said on air last night), the enormity of Beijing has been fascinating.

It is hard to nominate just a few standout moments when looking back, but one was Libby Trickett and her gallantry in defeat to Britta Steffen. She's been through some tough times, but exhibited such sportsmanship.

What about Jared Tallent picking up silver in the 50km walk today? Not bad when you add it to the 20km bronze earlier in the week. Everything about Jared is a great story. He is another potato farmer (we love them), he is going to marry a fellow walker and he is now the first Aussie to win two track medals in 108 years.

Pardon the cliché, but Jared showed old Aussie ‘give it a go' spirit today and it paid off. Great stuff.

It will be interesting to see how China goes from now on. It was only a matter of time until they got rolling in the Olympics and what better way to start than by hosting. They lived up to their expectations at home and will dominate for some time to come if they want.

Before entering the ridiculous Phelps V Bolt debate consider your what your opinion would ne if Phelps was an Aussie. Better still imagine if Ian Thorpe had won 8 Golds at these games. We'd be calling him the greatest Olympian ever which is what Phelps now is.
