BEIJING 2008

Raelene Boyle: Athletics needs more from all concerned

Well done to Jared Tallent for picking up silver today in the 50km walk, to add to his bronze in the 20km. Without Nathan Deakes, Jared really stepped up and made himself known at Beijing.

With Great Britain topping us in the medal count for the first time in 20 years, it is obvious that more funding is needed for athletics. Instead of turning our backs on a struggling sport, we should be developing it and addressing shortcomings.

In saying this, the athletes need to pull their weight as well by better understanding the culture of discipline that is required at this level.

There have been some great performances in the past week. What a talent Usain Bolt has turned out to be, winning the 100-200m double and making it look easy. Bolt's compatriot Veronica Campbell's performance was also special for me because her great victory was in the 200m, my own event while competing.

Well done also to Joel Milburn and Sean Wroe for their performances in the 400m flat.

The disappointments for me this week were some of the athletes that lacked heart. You can't talk yourself up for six months and then put in a sub-par effort.

Give us a break Raylene. Do you really think they train so hard for so long, just to go to
the Olympics to put in a sub-par effort? At times I think you are the one that has lost the
Aussie spirit. Your comments about the 4x100m relay team not being good enough to
to the Beijing were disgusting. Have you lost all faith? They had a spot, they deserved to
be given a chance and as it turns out, they would have sailed into the final. If you can't be
positive, keep you comment to yourself.

The athletes need to raise the bar relating to their goals. Most of them seem to be happy to progress` from the first round. If thaty was how it was in swimming we wouldn't have any finalists, let alone medalists. Athletics might need to take a leaf out of Swimming's book.

Just a comment for mcleanmerilyn - I'm very close to an elite athlete at world competition level & believe me, they just don't want to 'settle for getting into the next round'. Swimming is a non weight bearing sport - easier on the body during competition and recovery. Our athletes know the capabilities of their competitors & know before they start what they'll be able to achieve. When you know what you're talking about then you can comment. In the meantime, leave
