Becoming the first Australian woman to swim under one minute for the 100m backstroke in the semifinals at Australia's 2008 Olympic trials and then qualifying for the 2008 Olympic Games with another national record swim in the final. Won six gold medals and was named Female Swimmer of the Meet at the 2005 Queensland State Championships.
In March 2008, she set a new world record and became the first woman to swim under 28 seconds for the 50m backstroke during the semifinals of Australia's 2008 Olympic trials. She opted out of the 50m final the following day to concentrate on her 100m backstroke semifinal and had to look on from poolside as teammate Sophie Edington lowered her mark even further.
As a 14-year-old schoolgirl from Brisbane she was the story of the 2006 Australian National Championships, when she tied then reigning champion Tayliah Zimmer for gold in the 100m backstroke. The result meant she automatically qualified for a spot on Australia's 2007 World Championships team. "I watched a bit of the news and saw myself and was like 'whoa, look at me go'," she said. "All my friends were ringing me saying, 'oh my god, you're on TV, you're on TV'." She even had a little girl ask her for an autograph, but admitted to not having a proper signature.
At the age of three her family moved from Adelaide to Brisbane so her mother Karen, a competent open water swimmer, could pursue a coaching career in a city with more swimming clubs.
