Dr Andrew Randell, his coach and mentor.
Watching the Australian women's hockey team win gold at the 2000 Olympic Games.
Lance Armstrong, for his perseverance and determination to prevail against cancer.
He bucked the normal trend of athletes becoming coaches when he moved from his role as a coach to that of a coxswain, but the move has given him a new perspective on the sport. "I think we underestimate and undervalue the role of the coach. As an athlete, I feel I have a more direct input into the result. It is an incredibly lonely, hollow feeling as a coach when you see the athletes push off the pontoon for that last time." He also says the experience has "significantly enhanced my communication and decision-making skills."
He took up a scholarship at the Australian Institute of Sport in 2007.
He is also the director of rowing and head coach at Sydney University's Boat Club.
