• After taking several years off, giving birth two years ago and undergoing two surgeries within the past eight months, Torres earned a trip to Beijing by beating swimmers nearly half her age in the 100m freestyle at the Olympic trials before setting an American record in the 50m free.
• Torres, who made her Olympic debut at the 1984 Los Angeles Games, has twice retired from competitive swimming.
