In 2003 he and teammate Drew Ginn were named FISA Male Crew of the Year. He was named Rower of the Year in 1999. He was awarded the Order of Australia Medal in 1987. He is the only rower in history to win world championship titles in every sweep oar event. He is one of only four Australians to have won gold at three separate Olympic Games.
During a training session in the lead-up to the 2008 Olympic selection trials he suffered a heart scare. He had an irregular heart beat and was short of breathe. He was taken to hospital where he underwent a chest x-ray and an electrocardiogram [ECG] before being treated with a defibrillator.
