Her parents, Russell Parsons, Debbie Flintoff-King and Phil King.
She won the 2003 NSWIS Academic Award. In 2001 she received an Award of Merit at the Australian Canoeing Awards. She was named the 2000 Australian Female Marathon Canoeist of the Year.
Her drive to compete at the Olympic Games was originally inspired by her junior athletics coach and 1988 Olympic gold medallist in the 400m hurdles Debbie Flintoff-King and her coach and husband Phil King. "Competing at the Olympics has been a life long dream."
In addition to her studies at Deakin University she undertook a Diploma of Physical Education at the University of Technology, Sydney.
