He sat out the 2002 season after suffering patella tendonopathy and a number of back problems.
He just missed a medal at the World Junior Championships in 2000, finishing fourth. Was named the 2005 City of Whitehorse Athlete of the Year on the basis of his finishing 2005 with a personal best of 5.87 metres which broke a long standing Victorian record.
In an effort to remain focussed, he and fellow Australian pole vaulter Paul Burgess made a pact that neither of them will become involved in a serious relationship before the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China. "If one of us does slip into one of those horrible, horrible relationships, you have to pay the other person $5000," Burgess said.
