• Steffen was part of Germany's bronze medal-winning team at the age of 16 in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
• She swam in the preliminaries of the 4x100m freestyle relay at the 2004 Athens Games, but left without a medal
• Steffen recorded the fastest relay split ever in the 4x100m freestyle relay, helping Germany win gold and set a world record at the 2006 European Championships in Budapest, Hungary.
• At the same competition, she broke the world record in the 100m free on her way to another gold. Steffen finished with two more golds, taking the 50m freestyle and setting another world record in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
• That success led many to question whether Steffen was guilty of doping. In an effort to prove her accomplishments were achieved legitimately, Steffen signed up for a "blood passport" program launched by the German swim team.
