Adam Blair hung off Cooper Cronk's shoulder to buist open the Eels for the second time in the first half. Smith missed his second conversion attempt to leave the Storm 10-0 up at half time.
Eric Grothe Jr opened the scoring for the Eels in the second half but he STorm scored twice in quick succession to open up a sizable 16 point lead.
The Eels seized the late momentum as they cut the lead to six until Billy Slater pleaded for a penalty after controversially claiming the ball had been stripped from him.
Melbourne retrieved valuable field position from the ensuing kick for touch and Greg Inglis took the opportunity to break the spirits of the Eels with a 35m dropped goal.
Billy Slater was named the Clive Churchill Medalist.
