The Archer: Lighting Up The Games

The opening ceremony of the 1992 Olympics at Barcelona featured one of the more bizarre lighting of cauldrons, but also the most daring.

At the Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys archer Antonio Rebollo fired a flaming arrow over the crowd to land into and light the Olympic cauldron.

What really happened is the arrow flew out of the stadium while the cauldron was ignited remotely as the arrow passed over it. But the special effect worked, making it a marvelous spectacle for those watching around the world.
