Lauren Jackson named as Australian flag bearer

Basketballer

Lauren Jackson will lead the Australian Olympic team around the stadium as flag

bearer during the opening ceremony.

The

31-year-old will take the honour in front of the 80,000 fans on Saturday

morning (AEST).

Earlier

today Australian chef de mission Nick Green hinted the leader of the group may

be a cyclist.

Asked if

members of the Australian men's road cycling team were going to attend the

opening ceremony, Green was caged in his response.

"As

far as we know there is no cyclist, no road cyclists, marching in the opening

ceremony," he said.

"Well,

there could be one exception."

Green,

himself a two-time gold medallist said the accolade will change the person’s

life forever.

"It

has been an emotional choice to be honest," he said.

"I

have been taking the time to sit back and reflect and watch to ensure the decision

was the right one.

Some of the favourites to carry the flag included Swimmer Leisel Jones, cyclist

Anna Meares and beach volleyballer Natalie Cook.

"It

has been absolute pleasure going through that process and making that

decision," Green said.
