Mills' buzzer-beater gives Boomers win

Boomers star Patty Mills nailed a buzzer-beating three-pointer to give Australia their biggest scalp of the Olympic Games men's basketball tournament so far.

Mills' huge clutch three gave Australia a stunning 82-80 upset of Russia on Monday in their final Group B match, and put the Boomers on a three-match winning streak going into Wednesday's quarter-finals.

But despite beating the top team in Group B - they'll need an even bigger scalp to progress any further.

The United States' Dream Team now loom in the quarters, though Argentina are also possibilities if they can surprise the US in the last of the preliminary round clashes late Monday night (Tuesday AEST).

The winners will top the group and face Australia in a quarter-finals.

But the Boomers can do no more than win, and the team chemistry and fitness they earmarked as the key to their progression were on show in a superb performance against a strong Russian team.

Mills' buzzer-beater - to add to a remarkable series of individual highlights from Australia's Olympic men's and women's basketballers at these Games - gave the Boomers a win after they trailed by a point with four seconds left.

Vitaliy Fridzon's pair of free-throws off a Matt Nielsen foul looked set to give Russia a win in a match which was tense and tight all the way through - though it had no effect on the final in-group positions.

With Russia already qualified as the top team in the group and the Boomers to finish fourth and into the quarters regardless of the result, the Boomers found their early range from the perimeter - shooting seven-of-13 from beyond the arc to Russia's six-of-13 in the first half.

They led by nine points at quarter-time before Russia rolled it back to trail by a point at halftime.

Then Joe Ingles stepped up for Australia with a monster third term, helping himself to nine of his 20 points in the period.

What followed in the fourth was the teams trading baskets and defence which was near-Greco-Roman wrestling at times.

Then trailing by just a point, Mills found space beyond the arc and drained the three to send his teammates wild.
