A life-sized portrait of Lauren Jackson is attracting plenty of attention from passers-by in Canberra after the basketballer was announced as Australia's flagbearer for the London Olympic opening ceremony.

Jackson is a long-standing player with the Canberra Capitals WNBL team, and is returning to play for the team in 2013.

Artist Margaret Hadfield has placed her six-foot Lauren Jackson painting on display outside her south Canberra studio, draped with an Australian flag.

"People have stopped and thought it was really great that Lauren's been chosen," she said.

"We in Canberra have sort of adopted her as our own, and I keep reminding people that she's come from Albury.

"It's been a lovely response from people. I'm proud of the painting. I think Lauren is an amazing figure to paint."

Hadfield's Jackson painting was an entry for the Archibald Portrait Prize.

"I painted her earlier this year and the end of last year, but it didn't get hung," she said.

"I've put her on display out the front because I was so happy that she was chosen to be flagbearer.

"She's so modest, and she's such an amazing sports person."

Jackson is competing in her fourth Olympics and will be Australia's first female flagbearer since 1992.
