Aussie footballers flourishing abroad

Post World Cup and our Aussies abroad are flourishing with their respective clubs.

The regeneration of the Socceroos by coach Ange Postecoglou has breathed new life into the national team, giving all Australian players renewed confidence and motivation.

His willingness to reward form, regardless of age and reputation, is having pervasive effects on all players eligible to wear the green and gold.

This aura of opportunity is captivating players and right now could not be a better time for our young and upcoming stars to showcase why they should be a part of Postecoglou’s plans.

The upcoming friendlies are the most immediate occasion to impress on the national stage, but continued form and progress will leave players hoping they can substantiate a claim to feature in the Asian Cup next year and in the long-term, Russia 2018.

But who is in contention and what is happening around the world for our Socceroo prospects?

Yahoo7 Sport has all the answers right here.

Defender Jason Davidson became the 49th Australian to play in England's top flight as he made his Premier League debut for West Bromwich Albion on Sunday (Monday morning AEST).

The 23-year-old player featured as a substitute and played the final half-hour at St Mary's.

He looked very settled and composed and had a solid overall performance as the Baggies picked up their second point of the season.

Davidson established himself as the potential long-term left back for the Socceroos and the former Heracles defender could be in line for an extended run in Alan Irvine's side as well with first-choice left-back Sebastien Pocognoli sidelined with injury.

This morning he did his chances no harm as he played a full match and provided the winner for WBA as they prevailed 7-6 on penalties against Oxford to reach the third round of the League Cup.

Over the weekend captain Mile Jedinak played a full 90 minutes and set up a goal against West Ham.

He assisted Marouane Chamakh who slotted home a delightful goal but the manager-less Eagles slumped to their second straight defeat to start the season.

Meanwhile Adam Federici and Ryan Edwards suffered a 4-0 loss for Reading in the Championship and Ryan Williams’s Fulham endured a 5-1 thrashing at Derby County as their tumultuous start to the season continued.

Moving down a league and 20-year-old Brad Smith celebrated his senior Australia call up with a win, the left-back making a comeback from injury to help Swindon Town to a 2-0 triumph over Crewe Alexandra.

Smith is currently on loan from Liverpool and looks set to make his international debut in next month's friendlies.

In other League One fixtures, Bailey Wright played 84 minutes in Preston North End's 1-0 win over Oldham.

Our player of the tournament at the World Cup Mathew Leckie starred on his return from injury, playing a role in both goals as his side surged to their first win of the Bundesliga 2 season on Sunday night.

Making his first start since being held back by an abdominal injury a fortnight ago, Leckie scored the first goal then set up his side's second as Ingolstadt won 2-0 over local rivals Greuther Furth.

His performance mirroring the potential he demonstrated at the World Cup and exposing just how important he will be for this generation of Socceroos.

The 23-year-old went on a magnificent solo run, bursting through the field with his electric pace and power before a clinical finish to give his side the lead just after the hour mark.

Leckie then did all the hard work before laying off to Pascal Gross, who hit a rasping low drive to seal the result eight minutes from time.

In the Bundesliga, Mitch Langerak earned a rare start in goals for Borussia Dortmund and also contributed to the creation of a new league record.

Unfortunately, it was not the type of record that he would have wanted to be a part of, as he conceded the league's fastest ever goal, with Leverkusen opening the scoring after just nine seconds.

For Leverkusen Robbie Kruse was absent as he seeks to regain match fitness in his comeback from surgery, but his side went on to seal the match 2-0.

Across the border in Netherlands, Tommy Oar produced a man-of-the-match effort in Utrecht's 2-1 away win over Luke Wilkshire's Feyenoord.

His side came from behind in the first half and Oar provided the assists for both of Utrecht’s goals as they pulled off a huge upset.

Josh Brillante celebrated a call-up to Postecoglou’s squad for the upcoming friendlies but his side Fiorentina didn’t play on the weekend as they are preparing for their Serie A opener against Roma on Sunday.

On Thursday, Socceroos No.1 Matt Ryan was selected in Postecoglou’s squad and on Friday he helped Club Brugge to a crucial 2-1 win in their Europa League qualifier first leg with Swiss side Grasshopper.

He then rounded off the week by tasting defeat in the Belgian Pro League 3-1 to Mechelen on Sunday.

James Holland played 83 minutes in Austria Wien’s 2-2 draw with derby rivals Rapid Wien while Vidosic was involved in a 3-1 cup victory over a second tier rival.

Asia

Josh Kennedy, Alex Wilkinson and Ryan McGowan all featured on the weekend as their respective leagues continue their seasons.

Kennedy's Nagoya Grampus picked up a point in Japan, while McGowan's Shandong outfit also recorded a draw in China.

Wilkinson's Jeonbuk Motors slumped to a 2-1 home defeat but they still retained top spot in the K League.
