Surrounded by the toys of the rich and famous in Monte Carlo - world cycling is counting down to the start of its race of riches - the Tour De France. Look left and right and you're sure to see a Ferrari purring or a Rolls Royce rolling down the palm lined streets. This city is after all about style and substance. It's got it all. So where do a couple of Aussies in a Campervan park?
Well, myself and Anna James snagged an overnighter next to one of the numerous helicopter pads overlooking the blue sea. Yeah... doing it tough I know all for just 25 euros! But is there anywhere to slum it in Monaco? Well I'll let you know- but as yet - it's all first class.
We are ready to cheer on the Aussie contingent of cyclists - led by Silence-Lotto's main man Cadel Evans. After two straight years of coming runner-up, Australia's best road cyclist wants to make it clear - yes he's sick of being the bridesmaid - and yes he wants to wear the yellow jersey on the podium in Paris.
But before then there are so many gruelling stages to conquer. So many crashes to avoid. So much can stand in the way between dreams and reality.
Surprisingly, Cadel isn't favourite this year - that honour goes to Astana's Alberto Contador - the winner of the 2007 Tour De France. He's surrounded by a team of amazing athletes including, Levi Leipheimer and the 7 times Tour winner Lance Armstrong. It's going to be tough for Cadel - but we and all the Aussie fans will be right behind him - screaming at the top of our lungs from the side of the road.
Aussie Michael Rogers claims it will be too tough for Evans to beat Conatdor and the experienced Astana team. Maybe that's just the motivation he needs. Of course - we know the Silence Lotto team will give it their absolute all to help Cadel over the line.
There is a real buzz of excitement here in Monaco - we can't wait until the time trial begins. Keep following my blog on Yahoo7 and GO CADEL!!
