Melbourne ruckman John Meesen will miss the remainder of the 2009 season after he was diagnosed with a stress fracture in his right foot on Wednesday.

Meesen, who has played the last four games for Melbourne, pulled up sore after his side's 43-point defeat by Geelong on Sunday and will require surgery to fix the stress fracture in his right talus bone.

Melbourne's general manager of football Chris Connolly said it was a blow to lose Messen for the rest of 2009, but they were hoping to get the big man right for the start of the 2010 pre-season.

"John has performed well at the senior level this year, and this news is obviously very disappointing for both he and the Club," he said.

"The focus will now turn to preparing John for the commencement of the 2010 pre-season."

In another blow for the club, exciting young forward Austin Wonaeamirri has been ruled out for the next six weeks after he twisted his knee for the Casey Scorpions on the weekend.

Wonaeamirri is yet to play for Melbourne this season and he will have to wait even longer to add to the 18 games he played in 2008 after scans confirmed he had a lateral meniscus tear in his left knee.

"This is an unfortunate injury for Austin, but we look forward to having him available for selection in the second half of the year," Connolly said.
