Ponting out, Hussey in, Clarke captain

AAP - July 4, 2008, 7:56 am

Michael Clarke will captain Australia for the first time in a one-day international (Friday 2330 AEST) after Ricky Ponting was ruled out of the fourth one-dayer against the West Indies with a wrist injury.

Clarke, who twice led his country in Twenty20 internationals last summer, will become the 18th player to skipper Australia in a one-day cricket at Warner Park in St Kitts with Victorian batsman David Hussey to make his limited-overs debut as Ponting's batting replacement.

The captain's omission is the only change to the XI from the team which claimed a series-clinching victory in Grenada on Sunday, with Stuart Clark and Cameron White again missing out.

Ponting's wrist will again be assessed ahead of the final one-day match in St Kitts on Sunday, but the tendon injury - suffered while batting on Sunday - is not considered serious.

Clarke's elevation is another step in the 27-year-old's grooming towards the Test captaincy.

The NSW batsman became the youngest cricketer since Kim Hughes to lead Australia after captaining the side against New Zealand in a Twenty20 international last summer and was handed both the Test and one-day vice-captaincy for this tour following the retirement of Adam Gilchrist.

Hussey, meanwhile, will make his one-day debut after representing Australia twice in Twenty20 cricket.

He will again play alongside his older brother Michael Hussey in national colours having done so for the first time last month in Australia's Twenty20 loss to the Windies.

Australia hold an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match series, but are determined to complete a 5-0 clean sweep playing their first one-day competition since the retirements of Adam Gilchrist and Brad Hogg, and with imposing opener Matthew Hayden out injured.

"With the team we have now, if we can win 5-0 it certainly shows we've stood tall," said Clarke.

"Obviously we've lost a lot of players from both forms of the games, but we won the Test series here, and hopefully if we win this 5-0 it will be a great start to what is a new era."
