Four Lance Franklin goals ensured Hawthorn was hot on Port Adelaide's heels at York Park in Launceston on Saturday afternoon, the Power leading 11.6 (72) to 8.7 (55) at half-time.
At the MCG, Richmond led Geelong by a single goal at the end of the first half, the Tigers ahead 5.4 (34) to 4.4 (28).
The Hawks trailed by 32 points at the first break, but outscored the Power in the second term, dragging the margin down to just 17 by the half-time siren.
Hawthorn forward Brad Sewell played a remarkable half, notching 15 disposals as well as kicking two majors of his own.
The Power's Shaun Burgoyne turned in a strong first-half performance with 16 possessions and three marks, and Warren Tredrea dominated the scoring with four goals.
In Melbourne, Brett Deledio kicked 2.1 and had 10 disposals to help the Tigers pull ahead in the first half.
The home side led by 20 points at one stage, but the so-far undefeated Cats clawed their way back to be just one goal behind at the break.
Gary Ablett shone for the Cats, making 17 disposals in his return from a calf injury.
