New South Wales forward Willie Mason says the Blues must back team-mate Paul Gallen ahead of next week's State of Origin opener.

Gallen said earlier this week that the Blues were more passionate about winning than Queensland, and that it is New South Wales' turn to win a series.

The Maroons will be looking for their third consecutive series, and are expected to start as clear favourites next Wednesday.

Mason says Gallen, who also said he "hates" Queensland, has the backing of all the players.

"We've got to stick solid on this as New South Wales players, Gallen's come out and said what he's thinking which I love," he said.

"As a part of the forward pack we've got to stick by him so I'm not going to not back him up."

Mason says his the Blues are happy to take the underdog tag for the series.

Queensland has won the last two series and will equal the Origin record of three consecutive series wins if they are successful this year.

Maroons' winger Greg Inglis was unable to train on the Gold Coast yesterday because of illness, but is expected to be fit for next week's clash.

Mason says Queensland's favourite status will provide strong motivation for the Blues.

"I think you get the general consensus from the media and ex players and all that kind of stuff, they think that we're going to get beat 3-0," Mason said.

"You know that sits all right with us - we've got a point to prove now."
