Allrounder Chris Simpson has been confirmed as Queensland's new cricket captain.
Simpson, 26, replaces the retired Jimmy Maher for the 2008-09 domestic season.
"It's a great honour and one that I am grateful for the chance to tackle," said Simpson, who skippered the Bulls in their final Pura Cup game last season.
"But I'm well aware that the hard work started at the end of last season and won't be letting up as we get closer to the start of the coming season."
Simpson said he would draw on the experience of veterans Martin Love and Andy Bichel in his role as captain after Queensland endured their worst first-class season in more than 30 years to finish last in the Pura Cup.
Bichel took a significant step on Monday in his return from major surgery to his right shoulder when he bowled 16 balls under the supervision of Love, who is assisting with some of his physiotherapy in his rehabilitation in Brisbane.
The 37-year-old reported no ill-effects from his return to the bowling crease and will continue to follow a progressive build-up in the hope of being available for the start of the season in October.
Bichel will be expected to spearhead a Queensland attack missing retired quick Michael Kasprowicz, and with Ashley Noffke and Mitchell Johnson expected to be away on international duty.
The 20-man Queensland contracted player list contains new faces in South Australian recruit Ryan Harris and 2007-08 Peter Burge Medallist Glen Batticciotto.
Allrounder Lee Carseldine returns to the list for the first time since 2003 after making a stirring comeback to the Bulls last season following major back surgery.
The Bulls rookie list contains five teenagers, including Gold Coast pace bowler Alister McDermott, the son of former Test quick Craig.
Justin Sternes will be the new Queensland Academy of Sport coach, replacing Trevor Barsby who was named Bulls coach last week.
Batsman Craig Philipson and allrounder Michael Buchanan were not offered contracts.
