West Brom star Liam Ridgewell has apologised after being photographed wiping his bum with £20 notes.
The defender was pictured using the cash to help him in his ablutions in a bathroom whose floor was covered in bundles of £20 notes.
The photograph was leaked to UK newspaper, The Sun, by a fan who had somehow got hold of the picture, and Ridgewell has said sorry to anyone he might have offended.
"The photo was taken in the privacy of my home around eight months ago as a joke to wind up a mate, who I had just won a personal bet with," the former Birmingham star explained to The Sun.
The 28-year-old - who earns £20,000-a-week with the high-flying Midlands club - was clearly mortified about his cheeky prank getting a far wider audience than intended, particularly given the paper's highly-inflammatory report about how his wages equate to the average annual salary in the Birmingham area.
"I only intended him to see the photo but now it's public, I can understand how it will be viewed. I am sorry for any offence it causes," he added.
The Sun do not seem inclined to accept his apology: the headline on their story labels Ridgewell "The vilest footballer in Britain".

Good comments people: A joke between friends...in the privacy of his own home...with HIS money. Not my sort of thing, but hey... Sounds a little like the pic of Prince Harry. The people 'leaking' such photos should be charged for Invasion of Privacy!

ReplyNo different in Oz. Here they usually get stoned or just drunk ands then deficate on someone, punch an innocent bystander, so its just the same football mentality. If you idiots stopped going to the matches in a mass protest or the NRL (or whoever they are these days) decreased their salaries to something befitting a footballer (AKA brain dead halfwit), maybe some thing would change but its the fault of all those who follow the "sport" of football in its many codes who perpetuate this behaviour and lack of respect. Newspapers in Oz in winter are mostle about football. Monday TV sports news, the first item on the agenda is who was in the judiciary with his QC or barrister (who pays for these wigs??) for making the same boofhead penalty they have been doing for the last 30 years. Get a freakin life footballers!
