Yow Yeh's 2012 hopes killed off

Broncos winger Jharal Yow Yeh, who suffered a horrific ankle injury last weekend, has been told he will not play until next season.

The best case scenario for the 22-year-old is that he will be able to undergo pre-season training in November after the Broncos were earlier hopeful he would be available by early September.

Orthopaedic surgeon Dr Peter Myers delivered the prognosis yesterday saying Yow Yeh's "compound comminuted fracture dislocation" of the right ankle is more like a road trauma incident rather than a footballing injury.

Comminsuted fractures are caused by a sudden, hard or heavy crushing weight that splinters the bone into pieces.

Dr Myers said a decision on when to operate on Yow Yeh will depend on one thing.

"When it is determined that the wound is satisfactory to proceed, then definitive stabilisation of the fracture and dislocation will be undertaken," her told The Courier Mail.

"This will be either Thursday or Saturday of this week.

"Jharal is not planning to return to rugby league this year, but hopefully will be able to join the team for pre-season training."

Former prop and current Broncos general manager Andrew Gee conceded the news that Yow Yeh will definitely miss the remainder of the season is a blow but dismissed any suggestion his career could be over.

"Dr Myers is quite confident Jharal will be OK - We genuinely thought on Monday he might be a chance of playing this year," he said.

Brisbane have named Dale Copley to replace Yow Yeh on the wing for this weekend's blockbuster match against the Dragons at Suncorp Stadium.

The Broncos will be celebrating 20 years since their first premiership with a host of legends to be introduced to the crowd prior to kick-off.

Yow Yeh will be forced to watch from his hospital bed.
