A golfer's name is being kept secret after his errant swing inadvertently sparked a 25-acre blaze in California.

The unfortunate hacker found himself playing from off the fairway over the weekend where his unruly swing struck a rock and sparked the bushfire that required 150 firefighters to subdue.

Officials say the fire burned through the rough surrounding the course and into vegetation next to the course and over two dry hillsides.

Orange County Fire Authority Capt Greg McKeown told the BBC he had never responded to a call of this bizarre nature before.

The golfer will not be charged with any offence over the incident.
