Reading's Federici keen to atone for opening day blunder

Reading goalkeeper Adam Federici is desperate to bounce back from his howler in his Premier League debut yesterday.

The 27-year old Australian gifted Stoke City an opening goal in the 34th minute at the Madejski Stadium, allowing Michael Kightly's effort slip through his arms and into the back of the net.

Federici, who was one of the top few keepers in the Championship last season, is well aware that he made a glaring mistake and is now keen to atone for the blunder when the Royals meet Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

"I've never made that mistake in training, let alone in games," said Federici. "There was a massive deflection on it. It kind of just stuck to my shirt and spun off my wet top and I just lost it.

"It's tough to take. I've worked extremely hard to get here and to have that first experience in the Prem. I'd say I was a little bit nervous as well, and the boys were, to start with.

"But, early days, there's a long way to go and I'm sure that the next few games will be good ones for myself in particular."

Despite Federici's error, Reading were able to respond thanks to Adam Le Fondre's 90th-minute penalty which allowed them to grab a point in their return to the top flight.
