German club Hamburg have not dropped their interest in a return for Tottenham's Rafael van der Vaart.

The Dutch attacking midfielder had emerged as a Hamburg target when it was apparent he was prepared to move to Germany to be closer to wife Sylvie who had started a new television job nearby.

That interest seemed to have eased when van der Vaart revealed he would stay with Spurs but again Hamburg boss Thorsten Fink is monitoring the 29-year old although he does admit the club cannot afford his services.

"We have drawn up a target profile and Rafael van der Vaart would be an ideal fit," said Fink on Sport1.de regarding the ex-Hamburg star.

"Any coach would be delighted to have him. Rafael is a very good player and he would be very interesting for Hamburg if we had the money to pay for him.

"And we are not lacking just a little, we are talking about a great deal of money."
