RoI no.2 Tardelli backs Sunderland's McClean to become Euro star

Republic of Ireland assistant manager Marco Tardelli has hinted that James McClean could become a star at this summer's European Championships.

The 23-year old Sunderland winger is in Giovanni Trapattoni's squad for Euro2012 and Tardelli suggests he may be used despite being in the same team as the likes of Damien Duff, Stephen Hunt and Aiden McGeady.

"He is a good boy. He wants to work because he knows he needs to learn many things," the assistant told reporters.

"He is strong physically and I think he will be for us a good player.

"I don't know (what role he will play). He is in the squad, but we have also other players like Duff, like Hunt, like McGeady.

"Surely, he is the future, but maybe it is possible also this time."
