Despite being in England camp, Steven Gerrard has revealed he was kept in the loop regarding Liverpool's pursuit for a manager.

The Anfield club today unveiled former Swansea City boss Brendan Rodgers as their replacement for Kenny Dalglish and Gerrard has made it clear that the Northern Irishman was always first choice even though it appeared that Wigan Athletic's Roberto Martinez had turned down the job.

"What I can go on record and say is that Brendan was the first choice," the England and Reds skipper said.

"I was in the loop all the way through the last few weeks with the Liverpool board and the owners and Brendan Rodgers was the first choice."
