A tenacious 84 by Michael Klinger helped South Australia take opening day honours against Queensland in the Sheffield Shield match in Adelaide.

The Redbacks were 3-275 at stumps on day one, with Cameron Borgas not out 56 and Tom Cooper unbeaten on 49.

Klinger displayed immense concentration in batting almost an hour and a half for his runs on a gruelling first day for the Queenslanders in the field.

Only pacemen Scott Walter (2-56) and Chris Swan (1-36) captured wickets for the Bulls, who started the day in the worst possible fashion by dropping a catch from the opening ball.

SA opener Daniel Harris slashed the match starting delivery from Swan to Ryan Broad at point, who fumbled the opportunity.

Harris went on to post 57, and combined with Klinger for a 95-run stand for the second wicket, while his opening partner James Smith cracked five boundaries in his 21, made from just 17 balls.

Legspinner Daniel Doran (0-69 from 18 overs) and Bulls captain and offspinner Chris Simpson (0-69 from 23 overs) both had plenty of bowling on a first day pitch offering large amounts of turn.
