A century to Will Young helped carry New Zealand to a 39-run defeat of Scotland in their opening match at the under-19 cricket World Cup in Queensland.

Young's 115 off 111 balls was the key innings in New Zealand's 247-9 off 50 overs at Buderim on the Sunshine Coast on Sunday.

The Scots made a decent start to their chase at 65-1 through 12 overs but lost wickets steadily from there to be dismissed for 208 in the 47th over.

Seamer Connor Neynans and spinner Ish Sodhi both bowled tightly and took three wickets for New Zealand, who play Afghanistan at the same venue on Tuesday.

Afghanistan lost to Pakistan by 109 runs in their opening match on Saturday.
