The NRL salary cap will increase to $5m in 2013 after club chief executives agreed to the rise before last night’s season launch.
It is a $700,000 increase on this season’s cap and allows clubs to negotiate with star players coming off contract.
Negotiations are already under way for the much-vaunted TV rights deal in 2013, however clubs decided they couldn’t wait for a it to be finalised.
According to Fairfax reports, the newly formed ARL Commission – headed by John Grant – is yet to rubber stamp the agreed figure, but it is understood clubs have said that would be a minimum number.
The ARL Commission, depending on how much the new deal fetches, has the power to increase or decrease the agreed figure.
With several big-name stars off contract at the end of 2012 including Cooper Cronk, players could demand the type of money not seen since the Super League days of 1997.
It is not expected an agreement with the television networks will be reached before May 1, however preliminary discussions between Channel Nine and Fox Sports have already begun.
It is believed Seven and Ten are interested in televising some matches as well.
The Commission is unlikely to accept anything under the $1billion mark including digital, online and TV deals – particularly since the AFL fetched that last year.

A lot of people watch on TV in comparison- mainly because the NRL haven't cottoned on to Reasonable admission prices- last game I looked at for a family pass with 1 extra was as much as 4 games of AFL or 2-4 Waratah's matches pending where you want to sit. I don't disagree with your statement Mark- the NRL do get a good slice of TV air time-
ReplyI cant belive the NRL think they are going to get over a billion for t.v. rights just because the AFL did. I hope they do get it but when you compare yourself to a true national sport (teams in nearly every state) a hell of a lot bigger crowd attendance and bigger support basis you have to be joking.
ReplyDoes that mean that the salary cap will be increased again if the NRL does land the big bananas from the TV deal? Hope that Channel 10 gets the rights, word is they will ditch Nine's stodgy boring approach & really jazz up the coverage to appeal to a younger audience.
ReplyI hope Channel Nine do not get the NRL TV rights. Fancy putting up with Andrew Voss for another season or so. It is a pity thay Ray Hadley didn't put a left to his mouth to shut him up. Get rid of him in 2012 as well.
Replyits about time the n.r.l are reaping in the money and i still dont think its enough how do you think you are going to keep thease players
