Ricky Ponting has been handed back the captaincy reins for Friday's ODI against Sri Lanka at the SCG.
WIth Michael Clarke out injured the National Selections Panel (NSP) decided against blooding a young captain.
Many pundits believed that young star David Warner may have been given the chance to lead his country but instead the former captain, Ponting, was named.
"“After careful consideration the NSP has asked Ricky Ponting if he would captain the Australian ODI team in Michael Clarke’s absence," said NSP's John Inverarity.
"David Warner is a young player making his way. He displays considerable leadership potential, but the NSP is of the view that he should not, at this moment, have the added responsibility of captaincy thrust on him."
Clarke will return as captain for Sunday's clash against India in Brisbane.
Clarke's injury also meant Peter Forrest gets another chance to show his wares.
Other team news sees Brett Lee return from his toe injury, while Ben Hilfenhaus and Michael Hussey return to the squad while Ryan Harris will be rested.
Shane Watson is still not fit enough to return for Australia but will play SHeffield Shield this week in Perth.
Australia's squad for next two ODIs: Michael Clarke (Captain), Ricky Ponting (Captain for Friday’s ODI vs Sri Lanka), David Warner (vc), Dan Christian, Xavier Doherty, Peter Forrest, Ben Hilfenhaus, David Hussey, Michael Hussey, Brett Lee, Mitchell Marsh, Clint McKay, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade

OK, so we are PERMITTED to comment on sports articles but not on important issues such as the behaviour of our political leaders. Or how fanatical religous groups are operating in this country, exploiting our children at tax payers expense. Really sensible stuff Yankhoo7, the wat to show your support for Australians, silence them......good on ya's.
ReplyPonting still has the greatest cricketing brain in Australia-how many armchair cricketers have ever faced a fast bowler- most would shy away from a Greg Chappel under arm- Brett Lee should consider whether he wants to be a Ballerina - Hop Skip Jump champion- or a champion boxer fighting the invisible man - simply put I think he is a queer
