I think Watson's injury is a blessing in disguise. Now the selectors can search for genuine openers (finally). Time to fix a problem that has been ongoing since 2008. Watson has one defensive shot, and doesnt like to play off the back foot. He has a great average but the whole of Australia knows he is not a genuine opener. Cricket Australia put him back in the side after constant hamstring injuries during the "Keith Miller anniversary". They wanted to mould him as an all-rounder - which they did. Watson is a great cricketer but Cricket Australia and Ponting had gotten used to having devastating openers taking the shine
off the new ball quickly, e.g.Hayden, Langer, Gilchrist etc..,hence his promotion to opener. As fantastic as Watson has become in batting ability, Australian cricket will always suffer if they continue to use him at the top of the batting order. Although I think he would make an excellent number 3, - like a Jacque Kallis type of player. Cricket Australia is at it's worst-ever at the moment for playing favourites though. The rotation policy is only used for injuries and bowlers at the moment. Hopefully Rod Marsh and Inverarity bring sense back into Australian cricket.
