Good karma for Spurs after insane restaurant tip

San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich may be the best tipper in world sport if a receipt from an American restaurant is anything to go by.

The NBA has known for decades that Popovich is a stand-up guy and now it appears the rest of the world has some visual evidence to come to the same conclusion.

That comes in the form of a photo showing a bill for $815.73 at McEwen’s Memphis ("known for its wine selection," according to the San Antonio Express-News), accompanied by a staggering $5000 tip.

For those struggling to do the maths, that's a whopping 1,226 percent gratuity. You can bet it would have endeared him to the restaurant's waitstaff for life.

Though this will no doubt embarrass the five-time champion, it's good to see the character continue to reveal itself with Coach Pop.

McEwen's owner Bert Smithe confirmed to the San Antonio Express-News that "coach Popovich has been in our restaurant in the past multiple times."

However, the restaurant would not divulge whether Popovich was present on the night in question (curiously an off night between Spurs playoff games), because it does not "discuss anything that goes on when VIPs are in the building."

Read into it what you will but the Spurs just clinched a 103 - 116 win against the Memphis Grizzlies to go up 3-2 in their best-of-seven series, so perhaps good karma was on Popovich's side.
