Hawthorn's slim finals chances have taken a massive hit with news that key forward Jarryd Roughead will miss the rest of the season due to a knee injury.
Roughead will undergo arthroscopic surgery later in the week after suffering a lateral meniscus tear in last Saturday's disappointing loss to St Kilda in Tasmania.
It is a massive blow for the Hawks who, despite failing to fire for most of the season, still sit just four points adrift of eighth place Port Adelaide.
Roughead has table been a solid contributor up forward in what has been a difficult season for the injury-ravaged Hawks, currently sitting fifth on the goalkicking table with 51 goals.
In the Hawks premiership year, Roughead proved to be the ideal foil for superstar Lance Franklin in the forward fifty as the youngest team in the competition surprised everyone with a win over the highly-fancied Cats in the Grand Final.
Without Roughead to worry about opposition teams are sure to swarm Franklin and make it difficult for the Hawks to kick a winning score in their final three home and away games against Adelaide, Richmond and Essendon.
