Critically injured after being struck by a tram 13 months ago, Richmond's Graham Polak is in the mix to make a remarkable comeback to senior football, perhaps as soon as Sunday's clash with Sydney.
Polak suffered an acquired brain injury when struck by a tram while crossing Dandenong Road outside his Armadale house in July putting his career in serious jeopardy.
The club sought to place him on its rookie list in 2009 given his limited prospects for senior selection, but the 25-year-old has excelled for Coburg in the past month after starting the season playing in the VFL reserves.
"He was in our meeting this morning for opposition analysis and will be considered for selection which we will finalise later today," senior coach Jade Rawlings said.
"I didn't know if he would be able to get back - I thought he would be unlikely but he's kept improving every week."
"He's played a variety of positions and we want to try and consolidate his position in a key post, either centre half-forward or centre half-back."
"He'd been rucking a little bit (in the VFL) but we probably wouldn't be playing him as a ruck in the seniors."
Rawlings said everyone at Tigerland was delighted with Polak's progress.
"He wants to be treated like a senior footballer which is our expectation that he should be able to now that he's got through the significance of the injury," Rawlings said.
"He's performing at a level now where he can be considered - we wouldn't have put him in the squad if he wasn't now playing a sustainable brand that could stand up in the AFL."
Rawlings insisted that midfielder Shane Tuck would have a role to play at senior level over the last month of the season after coming to terms with the club's expectations of him.
Tuck was dropped to the VFL two weeks ago breaking a run of 107 consecutive games despite the fact that he was leading the AFL for 'hard ball gets' after 16 rounds.
"He missed out a couple of weeks ago when we weren't happy with a few parts of his game and he's now gone back and been able to correct those," said Rawlings.
"Now it's a matter of how he fits back into the team and we'll make those decisions over the next few weeks or even this week - he's in the squad again and we'll finalise that this afternoon."
Rawlings confirmed that second-year midfielder Trent Cotchin has been carrying a hip injury that appears likely to require some rest and rehab over the coming weeks.
"He's had a hip that he's been dealing with for a few weeks now and he just pulled up a bit sore (from last Sunday's win over Melbourne)," said Rawlings.
"We're going to make a decision this afternoon about where his future lies."
