The Brisbane Lions are facing a ruck crisis ahead of their upcoming clash with Geelong at Skilled Stadium after Jamie Charman was ruled out for four to six weeks with an ankle injury.
Ligament damage will keep Charman on the sidelines for at least a month, while Jed Adcock's ankle concern is much less severe. He remains a chance to take the field this week.
Charman's injury comes on the back of a knee injury sustained by Matthew Leuenberger last week that will keep the youngster out of AFL action for the better part of three months.
The injuries may force Lions coach Michael Voss to promote the rookie-listed Daniel Murray, who has played only one match in the AFLQ with the Lions' reserves.
"We've got young Bart McCulloch, he hasn't started playing, Daniel Murray is on our rookie list, he played on the weekend for the first time," Voss said.
"Whether or not he makes the next transition, we've now got two spots on our list available, Kieran King has gone on the long term injury list, along with Matthew Leuenberger."
"It's one of those ones where as a match committee you've got to go over the pros and cons of whether you bring someone in so early."
"Whether he's ready, does that help or hinder his development?"
Jared Brennan has rucked in the past, as has full-back Daniel Merrett on rare occasions, but Voss suggested he was hesitant to throw Brennan in the deep end a week after he returned from a quadriceps strain.
Youngster Matt Tyler was another alternative. He rucked in the NAB Cup for the Lions.
"I'm a bit noncommittal at the moment because we haven't sat down as a match committee and decided where we want to go," he said.
One certainty is that 21-year-old Mitch Clark will have to step up and fill the void, after being promoted as the side's No.1 ruckman due to the injury crisis.
Clark performed admirably both in the ruck and around the ground last Friday night against Collingwood's Josh Fraser, one of the in-form ruckman of the competition.
Voss was confident Clark could take it to another level once again.
"Mitch has been good the last few weeks, his energy and aggression and what he brought to the contest has been very good."
"Mitch will have to come in and shoulder that responsibility, but that's something I'd imagine he'll look forward to."
Voss said he would investigate the club's recent spate of ankle injuries that have grounded Charman, Adcock, King, Rhan Hooper and rookie Adam Spackman.
"I'm not sure if there is anything you can do to prevent it, but if you had four hamstrings, you would ask the question, what is going on?" he said.
"We've probably got about four or five guys that have had direct ankle injuries. We had a couple over the preseason that stifled a couple of weeks out of guys."
"We'll look at it, whether there is any short-term fix out of that or not. There are so many things to try and look at for our medical staff."
"All our ankle injuries have been along the lines of players leaving the ground and not landing properly.
"Maybe we need to do some more jumping training, I'm not too sure at this stage, it's a bit early to try and decipher."
