Port Adelaide star Chad Cornes has deemed himself fit and ready to play Melbourne at the MCG this Sunday.

Cornes has spent the past month on the sidelines after undergoing knee surgery following the Power's Round 10 clash against Collingwood. It was predicted the 29-year-old would be out of action for six weeks but his recovery has been quicker than expected.

"We had a really big training session yesterday (Sunday) with some match simulation and a fair bit of running as well. The knee felt really good and has pulled up well," Cornes said.

"It's been really hard watching for the last month. When the team's not going well, it's not the best being on the sidelines. You want to go out and help the boys."

Injuries have plagued Cornes' past two seasons with the versatile player breaking a finger early in 2008 before knee surgery, to repair torn cartilage, brought an end to his year in Round 16.

Cornes said the latest bout of surgery had proven to be more successful than the last.

"It's recovered a lot quicker than what I had done last year, and it's feeling a lot better as well," he said.

"The surgeon said that the knee has definitely got a couple of years, at least, left in it if it all goes to plan."

"I still think I've got some good footy in front of me. I'm not at all happy with where I'm sitting right now and what I've done over the last couple of years. I'm a pretty proud person and I want to play the footy I know I can and help the boys get back into the finals."
