Brisbane Lions powerhouse Jonathan Brown roused from hibernation to do what comes so naturally to him - putting Carlton to the sword - in Saturday night's clash at Telstra Dome.
Brown, who so far this year has played second fiddle up forward to Daniel Bradshaw, scored six to double his season's goal tally in leading the Lions to an easy 33-point win - 18.17 (125) to 12.20 (92).
The Victorian captain, who seems to delight in tormenting the navy blue as much as he loves wearing it, came into the match having earned three Brownlow votes in each of his past three encounters with Carlton and must surely be in the mix to make it a perfect 12 from 12.
Brown's main rival for best-afield honours was team-mate Simon Black. Rested from last week's Hall of Fame match, Black picked up 28 disposals including 12 in the first quarter when all the damage was done.
With Jamie Charman in full control at the centre bounces, the Lions dominated the clearances early and were able to make 21 first-quarter inside-50s (to Carlton's 10) count on scoreboard.
The visitors had eight goals on the board at quarter-time to Carlton's two and were never genuinely threatened thereafter.
Brett Ratten elected to start Jarrad Waite on Brown but, three goals and 20 minutes later, opted for 'Plan B' - Setanta O'hAilpin to Brown, releasing Waite to play spare across half-back.
Brown tormented O'hAilpin much as he had Waite, but Waite was able to get into a groove by picking off passes bound for the chests of Brown and Bradshaw, who was otherwise well-held by Michael Jamison until the Blues defender went off with a shoulder 'stinger' late in the third quarter.
The trade-off for playing a spare man down back is that it allowed Leigh Matthews to deploy Josh Drummond in the hole in front of Brendan Fevola.
In his milestone 150th match for the Blues, Fevola wasted his opportunities early with just the one goal from five first-half scoring shots.
Fevola battled hard for four-straight after half-time however and, with Brad Fisher having a dirty night, was the Blues only effective forward.
Marc Murphy (32 possessions and two goals) and Kade Simpson (23 touches and 10 marks) were among Carlton's best, while Heath Scotland racked-up a match-high 39 disposals.
_Sportal AFL Player of the Year_ votes: 3. Simon Black (Brisbane Lions) 2. Jonathan Brown (Brisbane Lions) 1. Marc Murphy (Carlton)
