Menzel, 21, underwent his first knee reconstruction - on his right knee - in 2011 after injuring the joint in his side's qualifying final win over Hawthorn, and ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee in his only competitive action since then, playing for Geelong's VFL side in June.
Cats assistant coach Nigel Lappin said Menzel has strained his left knee early this month, forcing him to miss the club's pre-season training camp in Falls Creek, but said the problem was only minor.
"Dan had a minor mishap at training," Lappin told the AFL website on Tuesday.
"We just wanted to make sure that the best treatment was available for him back in Geelong, so he's stayed back there.
"He was just doing a little bit of twisting work, but it was nothing major at all, so he'll be fine.
"He iced it up straight away and they sent him away to get it all checked out, but it seems to be fine."Lappin also revealed that emerging midfielder Billie Smedts is battling a hip problem, but said he was hopeful the 20-year-old would be fit to resume pre-season training in the New Year.
