The Gold Coast Suns have publicly set their sights on a maiden AFL Premiership within the next three years.
In what is sure to raise a few eyebrows, the Suns are targeting 20,000 members and a premiership by the end of 2015 as part of a new slogan labelled '20-ONE-3'.
The Suns, who managed just three wins throughout the 2012 competition, are two years into their short history in the AFL but it has not stopped the Gold Coast-based outfit from making bold declarations.
Chairman John Witheriff is aware of the ambitious nature of the club's statement but with a promising list that includes 2009 Brownlow Medallist Gary Ablett Jr and hot prospect Jaeger O'Meara, he is confident of success.
"Achieving 20-ONE-3, twenty thousand members and an AFL Premiership within three years will require hard work and a commitment from our players, our staff and our community," Witheriff said.
"We are well aware our targets are bold, however it is this boldness that has got this club and this Community to where it is today."
Gold Coast, who have added former Port Adelaide coach Matthew Primus to their coaching ranks, believe they are on the right track.
"The hard work is already being done on and off the field," Witheriff said.
"We've bolstered our coaching staff, recruited the best high performance team in the country and strengthened our playing list.
"As a club we are committed to providing an environment of high performance for our playing group which we are confident will translate into success for the team, the Club and our city."
Gold Coast begins next season with games against St Kilda, premiers Sydney and local rivals Brisbane Lions.

Too much time spent in the sun, they may scrape into the finals for the first time in 3 years, a premiership will be a few years away yet (and only if they play another interstate team)

ReplyThis idiot chairman coming out with such an expectation is not good news for Bluey McKenna who no doubt will be the scapegoat when this prediction falls flat, which it will. It also put's McKenna right on the spot when he is inevitably quizzed by the media about it. Perhaps a person like Witheriff who to my knowledge never played a game at any reasonable level should shut his trap and concentrate on making the club money. Leave the onfield expectations to the coaching and playing lists.

I predict the suns will win 3 out of their first 10 games in season 2013
1 ReplyNo way they have got to be dreaming high expectations already!!They are yet to win games in Melbourne and sneak into the 8 to play finals and finish in top 4 to have real crack and challenge to win their first flag in 3 years time which won't happen and be a complete failure. If they dare to do all of the above and be bold it will be "Now we are talking" which will have to be taken seriously and a big concern to all the other clubs but otherwise they will just keep on dreaming.
