AFL player beaten in 2km run by 44-year-old coach

Troubled West Coast forward Murray Newman has been embarrassed at pre-season training, twice beaten by coach John Worsfold in a 2km time trial on Monday morning.

Most Eagles players completed two 2km time-trials on Monday and Newman finished last in both, recording times of 8:13 and 9:36.

Worsfold, 44, beat Newman home on both occasions.

Newman finished well behind his teammates as well, with Chris Masten (6:05) winning the first and Bradd Dalziell (6:48) the second.

It comes after the 19-year-old was last week charged with grievous bodily harm after an incident in a Perth nightclub.

West Coast did not make a statement on Newman's performance on Monday, but confirmed he was not carrying an injury.

Newman played four matches for the Eagles last season, kicking three goals.

To be fair to Newman, Worsfold is still in good physical condition despite retiring from playing 1998.

But the two-time premiership captain was better known for his physical style of play than his blinding speed or endurance.

Rugby appears like cross country wrestling.... so anyone who has got a neck like a fire hydrant.... the body of a brahman bull......and brains commensurate...... then rugby would be a good fit..... Don't go all sooky now.....if that is your passion then we can only feel empathy.

It really bugs me when people feel the need to rubbish the AFL at the drop of a hat. If you don't like the game then fair enough but why bother reading something with AFL in the title, surely you could find something else to do
