There is speculation Israel Folau will quit the AFL and return to rugby league with Greater Western Sydney scheduling a press conference for Thursday afternoon.

Folau will join Giants chief executive Dale Holmes and coach Kevin Sheedy to address the media at 4pm Sydney time.

Early reports have linked Folau with NRL wooden spooners Parramatta.

After a successful career in the NRL with Melbourne Storm and Brisbane Broncos, Folau sensationally joined GWS on a four-year deal as a player and ambassador for the AFL's newest team.

But the 23-year-old has failed to reach the same heights in his adopted code, playing just 13 games and kicking two goals amid constant criticism in 2012.

By cutting Folau and his multi-million dollar contract loose, the Giants would be in a strong position to recruit spearhead forward Kurt Tippett.

Tippett will be available in the AFL's pre-season draft after a trade from Adelaide to Sydney fell over.

More to come
