Melbourne will take Jack Viney with the bargain pick of 26 in the AFL draft after neither Gold Coast nor Greater Western Sydney opted to put in a bid for the son of Demons great Todd.
Viney, 18, had been touted as a top-five pick but will slip through to the second round and land at Melbourne via the father-son system.
The Demons would have had to use pick three to secure Viney had the Giants or Suns opted to take him.
It leaves Melbourne with picks three and four in the draft, the latter of which comes as compensation for Tom Scully moving to GWS.
Viney, a left-footed midfielder, will join his father who played 233 games for the Demons and is now the club's general manager of player development and strategy at Melbourne.
Essendon have opted to use their first-round pick to take Joe Daniher through the father-son process.
The 201cm ruckman-forward was a standout at the under-18 national championships and will be taken with pick 10 as he follows in the footsteps of father Anthony, who played 118 games for the Bombers.
"To now be officially part of the football club is something I've aspired to do for so long," Daniher said.
"I've spent the past year training by myself at Windy Hill, so while most of the guys will probably be dreading a big pre-season, I can't wait."
The Western Bulldogs exercised their father-son option, taking Lachlan Hunter son of Mark with pick 46 after North Melbourne nominated to take him at pick 35.
On the first day of the trade period, Gold Coast gave up pick two in the draft to take gun Western Australian youngster Jack Martin in the mini-draft.
Martin, a star left-footed midfielder, can debut in 2014 with GWS now having the top two picks in the draft on November 22.
The Suns and Giants have also exchanged compensation picks.
