Midfielder Ryan Crowley has taken out Fremantle's best and fairest award after a breakout season with the Dockers.

The run-with midfielder claimed his first Doig Medal by four votes from forward Chris Mayne after dropping eight kilos over the pre-season in an effort to elevate his game to another level.

The 28-year-old nullified a host of the AFL's elite onballers in 2012, leading him to his first club champion award with 146 votes.

Utility Michael Johnson polled in more games than any other player and finished ahead of captain Matthew Pavlich in third as a result, despite both players finishing with 136 votes.

All Australian fullback Luke McPharlin led the poll by five votes at the end of the regular season but slipped down to fifth (135) after missing both of Fremantle's finals with a hamstring injury.

Both Crowley and Mayne polled strongly in the finals to move up to first and second respectively.

Crowley was given eight votes each for his shutdown roles on Geelong's James Kelly and Adelaide's Patrick Dangerfield and Mayne picked up a total of 20 across the same two games.

Pavlich polled 12 votes for his six-goal haul against Geelong in the elimination final while David Mundy overcame injury in the early part of the season to storm home with 64 votes in the Dockers' final five games of the season.
