Dockers losing Goddard battle

Fremantle assistant Peter Sumich says the club appears out of the running to recruit St Kilda champion Brendon Goddard.

Goddard is yet to sign a new deal with St Kilda, but with numerous clubs circling, including a Dockers' side coached by former Saints' boss Ross Lyon, Fremantle appear a long shot.

"Look what I've heard, it doesn't look like Goddard," Sumich declared on ''6PR'' on Wednesday night.

"I think he will stay in Melbourne, that's what I'm hearing at this stage."

While Sumich was unsure who might be arriving at Fremantle during the trade period, the assistant responded to reports Adam McPhee may be unhappy with being offered a new one-year contract at the club.

"We're pretty confident he'll stay," Sumich said.

"He had a terrific year and look he's at that age too, where, little bit like Quinten Lynch, clubs are going to offer those blokes one year and just roll them over and see what happens.

"If I got to 29 or 30, I'd be fine with one-year contracts.

"You just try and do your best each year and then go again if you do really well and you know yourself, so there's no use putting the club under pressure and yourself."

As for Sumich himself, the 2012 assistant coach of the year said he still harbours hopes of becoming a senior coach despite being overlooked for several roles in the past during a 10-year stay as an assistant at West Coast that ended in 2011.

A philosophical Sumich said getting a coaching gig remained a case of 'being in the right place at the right' time, although he admitted to not actively pursuing the vacant Port Adelaide position that is rumoured to be going to Leon Cameron.

"I inquired but I didn't really well pursue it," said Sumich when asked if he had applied to be coach at Alberton.

"Because, they had Rocket Eade (Collingwood assistant Rodney Eade) and (Brett) Ratten going for it.

"I thought one of them two would get it and I just thought I'd sit back and wait.

"But then I've heard just of late that Leon might have got it but we'll just wait and see, probably after the grand final."
