Ratten wants Port job

Sacked Carlton coach Brett Ratten has declared his interest in taking over the senior coaching reins at Port Adelaide.

Just over a fortnight after being given his marching orders from the Blues with a year still to run on his contract, Ratten told radio station 3AW on Saturday that he was excited by the prospect of potentially becoming Matthew Primus' successor at the Power.

Primus and Ratten were sacked in similar circumstances this year after their clubs both suffered embarrassing losses to expansion clubs GWS and Gold Coast respectively.

"I am keen to throw my hat in the ring," said Ratten, who coached Carlton for over five seasons.

"I've spoken to Craig Bradley a lot about Port Adelaide and he's one that's been there and has a lot of contact or an interest at that football club.

"I spoke to him really about the mechanics of the club and things like that.

"It would be really exciting to take on someone like Port Adelaide and be involved in that football club."

Ratten confirmed he had already held informal discussions with Port Adelaide officials but insisted he was a long way off from becoming the Power's new coach.

"We've only had a brief meeting to find out, sort of a touch and feel about each other, but we haven't done anything formal yet," Ratten said.

"There's a lot of water to go under the bridge, so we'll just wait and see."

Ratten coached Carlton in 120 games between 2007 and 2012 for a winning percentage of 50.42, but in that time could only manage one finals victory.

If the former Blues mentor was successful in his pursuit of the Power coaching gig, he would become just the fourth person in Port Adelaide's short history to do so behind Primus, Mark Williams and John Cahill.

Triple premiership coach Mick Malthouse was announced as Ratten's replacement at Carlton earlier this week on a three-year deal believed to be worth more than $1million per season.
