North play Wells waiting game

North Melbourne star Daniel Wells will have to get through two training sessions unscathed if he is to play against the West Coast Eagles in the club's cut-throat elimination final in Perth on Sunday.

Wells has been out of North's side ever since he hurt his calf in the opening quarter of their Round 20 clash with Essendon last month, but is expected to return to face the Eagles this weekend.

North are likely to name Wells in their 22 when they announce their team on Thursday night after a solid training session earlier in the day, but how he pulls up after training in Perth on Saturday may well determine whether he takes his place in the side.

"I will train today (Thursday) and then again on Saturday and will see how it goes," Wells said.

"Today will be another step towards it and I will know whether I will be ready to go and so will the club.

"But we will keep that (a secret) until we play on Sunday as there is no need as to why we need to say anything."

Wells said he was close to playing against Greater Western Sydney last round, but the club erred on the side of caution given they had already booked their spot in the finals.

The 27-year-old pulled up fine after training with the main group on Monday, but said he would only play against the Eagles if he was 100 percent fit.

"Everyone wants to play in the finals, but you don't want to get too emotional as you can become a liability," a frank Wells said.

"If you go down early with it (an injury) because you are not as prepared as you need to be, you are going to kick yourself in the foot and let your club down.

"I haven't had a soft tissue injury before so I am not sure how it is going to pull up.

"So far it has been going alright."

Only 12 players on North's list have finals experience, but Wells believes this won't be a problem as the club embarks on their first taste of September action since 2008.

"We have played some pretty big games already this year... the Collingwood game, Geelong earlier in the year and even the St Kilda game. These teams that have had it over us for a while," he said.
